Günter Haritz, 1972 Olympic Team Pursuit Champion, Dies at 77

The German cycling federation said he died overnight of cancer.

  • Haritz won Olympic gold in Munich as part of the celebrated "Gold Four" in the team pursuit.
  • He added world championship titles in the team pursuit in 1970 and 1973 before turning professional.
  • As a pro, he started 83 six-day races, winning 11, and claimed the 1976 European two-man title with René Pijnen.
  • After retiring, he ran a bicycle shop in Leimen, where he was later named an honorary citizen.
