Overview
- Automatic summary cards now appear at the top of lengthy email threads on Gmail’s iOS and Android apps for Google Workspace Business and Enterprise accounts and Google One AI Premium subscribers.
- Gemini AI generates the summaries by synthesizing key points from multi-reply threads, and these summaries refresh automatically as new emails arrive.
- The feature is available only for English-language emails on mobile devices and is rolling out gradually over a two-week period starting May 29, 2025.
- Users must enable Gmail’s Smart features to receive summaries and can opt out only by disabling all Gemini-powered tools, which also removes Smart Reply, drafting assistance and other AI functions.
- Google says that AI summaries are secured under the same Workspace protections that cover all other email data, and administrators can manage availability through the Workspace console.
