GM to Pause Lyriq and Vistiq Production at Spring Hill, Delay Second Shift for Next-Gen Bolt

GM says it is recalibrating output to reflect softer EV demand after federal incentives lapse.

Overview

  • Spring Hill will take downtime the week of Oct. 6, the week of Thanksgiving, and all of December, with assembly of the Cadillac Lyriq and Vistiq paused in December and operations limited to one shift from January through May 2026.
  • About 700 Spring Hill employees will be placed on temporary layoff, with battery pack teams affected and Ultium Cells workers not impacted, according to a company memo.
  • GM has indefinitely postponed adding a second shift at its Fairfax plant near Kansas City, though the next‑generation Chevrolet Bolt remains slated to start production later this year.
  • The company told Reuters it is making strategic production adjustments in line with expected slower EV industry growth, citing the end of the $7,500 federal tax credit on Sept. 30 and recent policy shifts.
  • GM posted back‑to‑back record EV sales in July and August, including about 21,000 units in August, yet it expects a near‑term pullback; separately, GM Korea says a small EV program continues with a changed local role after internal reports suggested cancellation.
