GM to Partially Idle Factory ZERO, Pausing Hummer EV and Escalade IQ Output Sept. 2–Oct. 6

GM says the pause aligns production with market conditions to manage inventory.

Overview

  • Two shifts at the Detroit-Hamtramck plant will be paused, halting assembly of the GMC Hummer EV and Cadillac Escalade IQ.
  • The temporary action will idle 160 workers, bringing total affected at the site to about 360 when combined with April’s 200 layoffs.
  • GM describes the scheduling change as a standard adjustment to match current demand and control vehicle stock levels.
  • Impacted employees will be placed on temporary layoff with potential eligibility for subpay and benefits under the GMUAW contract.
  • Factory ZERO employs about 4,000 people and also builds the Silverado EV and Sierra Denali, as U.S. electric pickup sales slipped roughly 4% in the first half of 2025.
