GM Recalls 62,000 Silverado Medium-Duty Trucks Over Brake Fire Risk

The recall follows a finding that a supplier’s unauthorized chemical degrades a rubber component in brake pressure sensors, prompting free harness replacements at dealerships.

Overview

  • The recall affects 62,468 Chevrolet Silverado Medium Duty 4500HD, 5500HD and 6500HD trucks from model years 2019 through 2024.
  • A degraded rubber seal in the brake pressure sensor can leak fluid into the switch, causing short circuits and potential engine compartment fires even when parked.
  • GM has logged 160 field reports, including one suspected fire, but is not aware of any injuries and estimates about 1% of recalled vehicles may be faulty.
  • Initial owner notification letters will be mailed by July 28, with a second notice sent once replacement wire harnesses are available.
  • Dealers will replace the brake pressure switch wire harness free of charge and owners should park recalled trucks outdoors away from buildings until repairs are completed.
