GM Confirms 1,750 Layoffs, Scales Back Detroit EV Plant as Ultium Cell Output Pauses in 2026

The company links the cuts to slower EV adoption after federal incentives ended, with battery production in Ohio and Tennessee paused from January to mid-2026.

Overview

  • About 1,200 workers at Detroit’s Factory ZERO and 550 at the Ultium Cells plant in Warren, Ohio, were placed on indefinite layoff, according to GM.
  • Factory ZERO will shut from November 24 to January 5 and then shift to a single production shift, with remaining roles determined by seniority.
  • Ultium Cells will temporarily lay off roughly 850 workers in Ohio and 700 in Spring Hill, Tennessee, as part of production adjustments.
  • Battery cell production at the Ohio and Tennessee Ultium facilities will be paused beginning January 2026 and is expected to resume by mid-2026 after upgrades.
  • GM cited slower near-term EV demand and policy changes, noted a roughly $1.6 billion EV-related charge, and said eligible workers may receive SUB pay or continued wages and benefits.
