GM Appoints Sterling Anderson as First-Ever Chief Product Officer

The former Tesla and Aurora executive will lead GM's hardware, software, and user experience integration starting June 2, 2025.

Overview

  • General Motors has created a new global product and chief product officer position to unify its gas- and electric-vehicle development.
  • Sterling Anderson, co-founder of Aurora and former Tesla Autopilot director, has been named to the role and will report to GM President Mark Reuss.
  • Anderson will oversee vehicle and manufacturing engineering, battery systems, software, and services teams, driving tighter integration across GM's product portfolio.
  • The position is part of GM CEO Mary Barra's strategy to modernize and electrify the company's lineup while enhancing safety and customer experiences.
  • Anderson, who holds a Ph.D. in robotics from MIT, will be based at GM's Mountain View Tech Center in California starting June 2, 2025.
