Glockenbrot Workers Stage Second 24-Hour Strike
Competition authorities have approved Rewe’s outsourcing plan, fueling employee demands for a 6.5 percent pay rise at the Frankfurt-Fechenheim plant.
Overview
- On July 27 at 22:00, about 480 employees of the Frankfurt-Fechenheim Glockenbrot bakery commenced a second 24-hour warning strike in this year’s tariff negotiations for the bread and baking industry in Hesse and Baden-Württemberg.
- The NGG is pressing for a 6.5 percent wage hike, a €100 monthly allowance for apprentices and a binding guarantee of job offers for trainees upon completion of their programs.
- Employer representatives have so far proposed a 2.8 percent raise in the first year and a further 2.3 percent in the second year, which union officials have deemed insufficient.
- The plant, which has supplied Rewe, Penny and Nahkauf stores nationwide for three decades, is due to close in three to five years under Rewe Group’s outsourcing plan to Harry-Brot, a move approved by the Bundeskartellamt.
- Negotiators will meet again on July 29 as workers aim to leverage the strike to secure a better deal from Rewe Group before talks stall again.
