Overview
- A rapid flash flood on September 26, 2025 sent water, mud and debris through narrow washes in Gila County, killing three people and causing more than $100 million in county damage with roughly $96 million in Globe.
- Crews are now removing sediment, widening washes and placing riprap in and near historic downtown Globe as visible construction work marks the one-year recovery effort.
- The mitigation work is funded in part by a USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service grant and $10 million from the Arizona budget, with the state allocation split to support Gila County, Miami and Globe.
- FEMA denied Arizona’s emergency disaster declaration, leaving many repair costs to local governments and residents and creating worry in Globe about meeting the USDA grant’s required 25% local match.
- Survivors and families continue to rebuild and grieve, with some residents still in temporary housing while individual stories such as Marine veteran David Hayes’s rehousing and return to work illustrate both progress and ongoing needs.
