Respondents in a majority of countries surveyed said they regarded China as the world’s top economy, or joint-top with the U.S.

Overview

  • China’s median favorability across 25 countries rose to 36 percent, reversing a years-long decline and reducing unfavorable opinions to 54 percent.
  • U.S. approval under President Trump fell sharply, including a 20-point drop in Canada to 34 percent and broad declines in other high-income democracies.
  • Only about a quarter of respondents trust Xi Jinping to handle world affairs and just 22 percent express confidence in Donald Trump.
  • A median 41 percent of adults now view China as the leading global economy, narrowing the gap with the United States at 39 percent.
  • Despite shifting sentiments, most surveyed nations still prioritize strong economic ties with the U.S. over China.
