Global Sumud Flotilla Reports Drone Strikes on 11 Boats in International Waters Off Crete

Italy requests guarantees for its nationals after the convoy reported its most serious incident this month.

Overview

  • Organizers said drones, sonic devices, irritant sprays and electronic interference targeted vessels anchored overnight in international waters south of Crete.
  • At least two sailboats were rendered partly inoperable — Zefiro with a broken forestay and Morgana with a disabled mainsail — with other boats also struck, and no injuries reported.
  • The flotilla, comprising about 51 civilian boats heading for Gaza with aid, called this the third and most intense attack reported in September.
  • Participants publicly accused Israel of responsibility, while Israeli officials had stated they would enforce the naval blockade and urged docking at Ashkelon for transfer of any cargo.
  • Italian foreign minister Antonio Tajani said Rome has asked Israel to ensure the safety of people on board, including Italian lawmakers and journalists.
