Global Study Finds Higher Suicidal Ideation in Adults With Atopic Eczema at EADV 2025

Findings from 27 countries point to severity, stigma, sleep disruption as key correlates.

Overview

  • The cross-sectional Scars of Life survey captured 30,801 adult responses in 2024, including 15,223 with physician-confirmed atopic eczema and 7,968 controls.
  • Reported suicidal ideation was 13.2% among people with atopic eczema versus 8.5% in controls, with elevated odds across childhood, adolescent, and adult-onset groups.
  • Risk rose with moderate-to-severe disease (OR=2.01) and with intense pruritus, skin pain, and higher overall symptom intensity.
  • Mixed insomnia showed a strong association (OR=1.78), while younger age under 30 (OR=1.6) and obesity (OR=1.29) were additional risk factors.
  • Researchers presented the results at the EADV Congress in Paris and urged clinicians to address mental-health needs in eczema care, with further analyses planned on cross-country differences.
