Overview

  • The international consensus statement was published on July 22, 2025, in Radiology by 21 chest radiologists and expert pulmonologists representing ESTI, STR and ASTR.
  • It recommends chest CT for patients whose respiratory symptoms persist or worsen three months after COVID-19 infection.
  • Follow-up imaging should use low-dose CT protocols that adhere to ALARA principles to minimize radiation exposure.
  • Authors endorse the term “post–COVID-19 residual lung abnormalities” and recommend Fleischner Society glossary terms to avoid misclassifying findings as interstitial lung disease.
  • Data indicate that most post–COVID-19 lung abnormalities stabilize or regress over time and that permanent fibrosis remains extremely rare.
