Global NCAP: Maruti Celerio Gets 3 Stars as Ciaz Scores 1 for Adult Safety

Global NCAP's tougher 2025 protocol shows airbags alone cannot offset unstable structures or weak child-seat performance.

Overview

  • India-spec Celerio with six airbags earned 3 stars for adult protection and 2 stars for child protection, with both the bodyshell and footwell rated unstable under the updated test regime.
  • Child-seat performance in the Celerio showed head exposure and poor neck and chest protection in frontal tests, and the lack of a passenger airbag deactivation switch limits safe use of rearward-facing seats in front.
  • Despite ESC, seatbelt reminders, six airbags and limited AEB features, the Celerio’s structural integrity and child-restraint compatibility capped its scores.
  • The discontinued Ciaz was rated 1 star for adult and 3 stars for child protection, with an unstable structure, no side or curtain airbags so no side-pole test, and missing three-point belts in all seating positions.
  • Global NCAP CEO Richard Woods welcomed Maruti Suzuki’s move to standardise six airbags and noted five-star results for newer models, but said legacy models still fall short, underscoring implications for current owners and used-car buyers.
