Global Executions Reach Highest Level Since 1981, Led by Iran

Amnesty blames political repression alongside harsher drug penalties.

Overview

  • Amnesty’s annual report published Monday logs at least 2,707 executions in 2025 across 17 countries, a 78% jump and the highest total the group has recorded since 1981.
  • Iran accounted for at least 2,159 executions — more than double its 2024 figure — which the group links to a post–June 2025 crackdown used to silence dissent and project control.
  • Several countries also increased executions, including Saudi Arabia at least 356, the United States 47 with Florida 19, Kuwait 17, Egypt 23 and Singapore 17.
  • Nearly half of all known executions, 1,257 in total, were for drug offenses, with the largest shares in Iran and Saudi Arabia and additional cases in Singapore and Kuwait.
  • The global count excludes thousands of suspected executions in China due to state secrecy, which means the true worldwide total is likely far higher.
