Overview

  • Major emitters, including China, India, and the European Union, failed to submit their 2035 climate targets on time, representing 83% of global emissions.
  • The United States, United Kingdom, and Brazil were among the few major economies to meet the deadline, though the U.S. pledge was largely symbolic, predating its withdrawal from the Paris Agreement.
  • UN climate chief Simon Stiell emphasized the importance of these plans, calling them 'the most important policy documents of this century,' and urged nations to submit by September for inclusion in the next assessment.
  • Geopolitical and economic challenges, as well as internal processes, were cited by countries like the EU, China, and India as reasons for delays in submitting their targets.
  • The COP30 summit in Brazil this November is seen as a critical opportunity for nations to present revised plans and demonstrate increased ambition to meet Paris Agreement goals.
