Global App Study Finds Perimenopause Knowledge Lags Lived Symptoms, With U.S. Ranking Sixth

An analysis of 17,494 responses from 158 countries shows fatigue, exhaustion and irritability eclipse hot flashes in reported experiences.

Overview

  • Mayo Clinic and Flo Health published the study in Menopause, using anonymized survey data from Flo app users collected between December 2024 and May 2025.
  • Across all participants, hot flashes, sleep problems and weight gain were the most commonly recognized symptoms, yet they were not the most frequently experienced.
  • Among respondents aged 35 and older, the top self-reported issues were fatigue and exhaustion (each 83%), irritability (80%), low mood (77%), sleep problems (76%), digestive issues (76%) and anxiety (75%).
  • Knowledge varied internationally, with the United Kingdom, Ireland, Canada, Australia and the Netherlands ahead of the United States, which placed sixth, and lower scores reported in Nigeria, France and parts of Latin America.
  • Authors call for research into demographic, lifestyle and social drivers of cross-country differences to guide tailored education for patients and clinicians, with additional papers on attitudes expected.
