Glasgow Merchant City Blaze Not Being Treated as Suspicious

Police say the Virginia Street hotel fire caused no injuries as firefighters worked through the night.

Overview

  • The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service was alerted around 6:18pm on Saturday to a well‑developed fourth‑floor blaze at a commercial building housing the Revolver hotel on Virginia Street.
  • Seven fire engines and two high‑reach appliances were deployed, with crews using aerial platforms to tackle the roof fire and prevent spread to neighbouring properties.
  • Two appliances remained on scene Sunday morning to dampen hotspots, and officials reported no casualties.
  • Glasgow City Council closed Glassford Street between Ingram Street and Trongate, and nearby premises including House of Gods, Trades Hall, Spires Serviced Suites and a Homeless Project Scotland kitchen were evacuated as a precaution.
  • Homeless Project Scotland said everyone was safe and confirmed its night shelter reopened just before midnight, while ScotRail reported services were still calling at Argyle Street and High Street stations.
