GitHub To Use Copilot User Interactions To Train AI By Default Starting April 24

Users keep an in-product privacy toggle to opt out at any time.

Overview

  • GitHub will shift Copilot Free, Pro and Pro+ users to default participation in training data collection, and any user who already disabled this stays opted out unless they opt back in.
  • Copilot Business and Copilot Enterprise users are excluded, as are interactions in enterprise-owned repositories and static content such as issues, discussions and private repo material.
  • If enabled, collected interaction data can include prompts, shown and accepted code, nearby code context, comments and docs, file names and repo structure, feature use patterns and thumbs-up or thumbs-down feedback.
  • GitHub says data from this program may be shared within its corporate group, including Microsoft, and it will not be provided to outside AI model vendors or independent service providers.
  • GitHub notes it has already trained on Microsoft interaction data and will start using GitHub employee interactions, and users who opt out can still use all Copilot features.
