GitHub Halts New Copilot Sign-Ups for Individuals, Tightens Token Limits

GitHub says long-running AI agents are straining compute capacity, prompting limits to protect reliability.

Overview

  • GitHub paused new Copilot Pro, Pro+, and Student sign-ups and tightened usage on individual plans to keep the service stable.
  • Leaders said long, parallel agent sessions now burn far more tokens than plans were designed to handle, putting strain on infrastructure.
  • Copilot now uses token-based session caps and weekly totals that curb extended runs, with Pro+ set at more than five times Pro’s token limits.
  • Model access changed as Anthropic’s Opus models were removed from Pro, Opus 4.5 and 4.6 will be removed from Pro+, and Opus 4.7 remains available on Pro+.
  • GitHub added usage meters in VS Code and Copilot CLI and offered April refunds to Pro or Pro+ users who cancel by May 20, as other AI providers also tighten access to manage demand.
