GitHub Disables Copilot Tips in Pull Requests After Backlash
GitHub blames a logic bug for ad-like messages in human-written PRs, raising fresh concerns about AI edit powers.
Overview
- Developer Zach Manson found that Copilot added a Raycast promo-style tip to his pull request after a teammate invoked the tool to fix a typo on Monday.
- Reporters searching GitHub uncovered more than 11,000 pull requests with the same Copilot-inserted phrasing, which appeared under a block labeled “START COPILOT CODING AGENT TIPS.”
- GitHub executives said allowing Copilot to modify PRs it did not create was a mistake, and they disabled these tips in PRs created by or touched by Copilot.
- Microsoft told Windows Latest the behavior was a bug rather than an advertising test, and GitHub said it removed agent tips from pull request comments and does not plan to show ads on GitHub.
- The episode highlighted that Copilot’s review integration could edit PR descriptions and comments and revived concern over GitHub’s policy to use repository inputs and outputs to train Microsoft’s AI models.
