GitHub CEO to Step Down as Company Joins Microsoft’s CoreAI Division

GitHub will cease operating independently as it joins Microsoft’s CoreAI division to deepen integration of Copilot AI tools

Overview

  • Thomas Dohmke announced he will resign as GitHub CEO to found a new startup and will remain through the end of 2025 to oversee the transition into CoreAI.
  • No successor will be named immediately, with product chief Mario Rodriguez reporting to Asha Sharma and Julia Liuson taking charge of GitHub’s engineering, revenue and support teams under CoreAI.
  • The move ends seven years of promised operational independence, folding GitHub’s more than 150 million developers and over 1 billion repositories into Microsoft’s centralized AI unit.
  • GitHub Copilot, used by over 20 million developers, will become a flagship initiative within CoreAI, aligning the platform’s AI coding tools with Microsoft’s broader developer AI strategy.
  • Microsoft positions the reorganization as a way to sharpen its lead in AI-assisted coding in the face of growing competition from rivals such as Cursor, Claude Code and Windsurf.
