- Kristalina Georgieva announced Gopinath will step down as first deputy managing director at the end of August.
- Gopinath will assume the newly established Gregory and Ania Coffey Professorship in Harvard’s Department of Economics on September 1.
- She joined the IMF in January 2019 as its first female chief economist and became first deputy managing director in January 2022.
- Gopinath led the Fund’s multilateral analysis of fiscal, monetary and trade policy and played a key role in country programs for Argentina and Ukraine.
- The IMF said it will name a successor to Gopinath in due course, marking a significant leadership transition at the Fund.
