Gita Gopinath to Depart IMF for Inaugural Coffey Professorship at Harvard

Her appointment caps a nearly seven-year stint guiding IMF surveillance alongside policy analyses.

Overview

  • Kristalina Georgieva announced Gopinath will step down as first deputy managing director at the end of August.
  • Gopinath will assume the newly established Gregory and Ania Coffey Professorship in Harvard’s Department of Economics on September 1.
  • She joined the IMF in January 2019 as its first female chief economist and became first deputy managing director in January 2022.
  • Gopinath led the Fund’s multilateral analysis of fiscal, monetary and trade policy and played a key role in country programs for Argentina and Ukraine.
