Gilroy Man Sought on Attempted Murder Charge After Oct. 2 Stabbing

License-plate camera data led police to the suspect’s vehicle and investigators say he may have fled to Mexico, making an arrest more difficult.

Overview

  • Police found a 45-year-old man with a serious abdominal stab wound near the 7300 block of Church Street and say the injury required emergency surgery on Oct. 2.
  • The victim was taken to a local trauma center and is expected to survive after the operation.
  • Detectives identified 35-year-old Jose Antonio Mateo Ruiz as the suspect through witness interviews, physical evidence, and additional investigative follow-up.
  • Investigators used Flock Safety automated license-plate camera data to track the suspect’s vehicle and later located the vehicle in Santa Cruz County, but they did not find Ruiz.
  • Authorities have issued an attempted murder warrant for Mateo Ruiz and say information suggests he may have fled to Mexico, which could require cross-jurisdiction cooperation to locate him; anyone with tips should contact Detective Cat Fraide at Gilroy Police.
