Gil Ofarim Admits to Fabricating Antisemitic Incident

Charges to be dropped following payment of €10,000 fine; Central Council of Jews in Germany condemns singer's actions.

Gil Ofarim, a Jewish-German singer, admitted in court that he fabricated a story accusing a hotel employee of antisemitic behavior.
The false accusation, which was made in a social media video in October 2021, led to defamation charges against Ofarim and widespread outrage in Germany.
As part of an agreement, charges against Ofarim will be dropped if he pays a €10,000 ($10,955) fine to the Jewish Community of Leipzig and the House of the Wannsee Conference memorial and education center within six months.
The Central Council of Jews in Germany condemned Ofarim's actions, stating that he must bear 'full responsibility' for his lies.
The court ended the trial, stating that the hotel manager's reputation had been more clearly rehabilitated as a result of Ofarim's admission of guilt and his apology.
