Giants Name J.J. McCarthy Starter and Reopen Mobile Offense

Coaches say fuller playbook access will restore run and option concepts that could reshape New York’s attack.

Overview

  • Head coach John Harbaugh announced that J.J. McCarthy will start the Week 7 road game at Houston and indicated the move is intended to continue beyond a single outing.
  • McCarthy earned the chance after replacing Jameis Winston in the fourth quarter on Oct. 18 and throwing for 243 yards and a touchdown while leading multiple late scoring drives against the Saints.
  • Offensive coordinator Matt Nagy said the team expanded McCarthy’s playbook from roughly 50 percent when he arrived to about 90 percent last week and expects it to reach full playbook access this week.
  • The Giants acquired McCarthy from the Minnesota Vikings on Sept. 28 for a 2027 fifth-round pick and are banking on his mobility despite lingering questions about his limited reps, past accuracy and decision-making in Minnesota.
  • The Texans game will be an early test of whether New York only briefly tweaks its plan or begins a longer-term shift toward more quarterback-run and option packages, a change some insiders have reported but the team has not fully confirmed.
