Giant Mastodon Tooth Unearthed on California Beach

A tourist found a mastodon tooth on a beach in Santa Cruz County, California.
The tooth was initially lost but recovered by a jogger and donated to a museum.
The Santa Cruz Museum of Natural History identified the tooth as belonging to an adult Pacific mastodon that lived less than 1 million years ago.
The discovery of the tooth is rare as only two other mastodon fossils have been found in the local area.
The museum plans to display the tooth and make it available for scientific research.
