Giant Hail Rips Through South‑East Queensland as Cleanup Begins and More Storms Loom

Forecasters expect showers and isolated severe storms to move east over the next two days.

Overview

  • Hail up to about 9 centimetres was reported at Pratten on Saturday, with 7–8 centimetre stones recorded on Sunday in areas including Googa Creek and Yarraman and up to 5 centimetres at Tamborine.
  • Nine people were treated after hail struck Esk State School’s 150th anniversary fair, with four taken to hospital in stable condition for mostly minor injuries.
  • The Queensland SES logged roughly 300 requests for help, mostly for damaged or leaking roofs, with additional reports of smashed windows, downed trees and some powerlines.
  • Power outages peaked in the thousands on the weekend; by Monday morning about 500–600 customers around Wandoan and Taroom remained off supply as Ergon deployed extra crews and aerial assessments to reach wet, hard‑to‑access sites.
  • The Bureau of Meteorology described the event as a widespread thunderstorm outbreak and signalled further showers and isolated severe storms for the Darling Downs and south‑east Queensland through Monday and Tuesday.
