Gianfranco Rosi Brings Black-and-White Naples Portrait 'Sotto le Nuvole' to Venice Competition

Rosi says the monochrome is a narrative choice to tell the film's silences.

Overview

  • The documentary is competing for the Leone d'Oro at the 2025 Venice Film Festival.
  • Filmed over three years around the Gulf of Naples, it spans Vesuvius, the Campi Flegrei and Pompeii.
  • Rosi interweaves nearly a dozen observational stories, including archaeologists, a museum worker, firefighters' calls, a street teacher, trot-horse training and a Syrian sailor unloading Ukrainian grain.
  • Early commentary highlights a montage-driven collage that recalls the structure of Rosi's 2013 Golden Lion winner Sacro GRA.
  • The film is set to open in Italian cinemas on 18 September via 01 Distribuzione, according to ANSA.
