GHMC Council Backs Merger of 27 ULBs, Setting Up Major Expansion of Hyderabad

Officials say integration will impose uniform standards to streamline services across the ORR suburbs.

Overview

  • The Telangana Cabinet approved the consolidation on November 25 and cleared amendments to the GHMC Act and the Telangana Municipalities Act to enable it.
  • The GHMC Council passed the tabled proposal after protests by MIM members, with the government asking GHMC to examine the plan, conduct studies, and submit remarks before steps such as ward delimitation.
  • The absorption covers municipalities in and around the Outer Ring Road, including Shamshabad, Manikonda, Narsingi, Kompally, Boduppal, Badangpet, Tellapur, Ameenpur, and Nizampet.
  • Reports project GHMC’s jurisdiction could grow from roughly 650 sq km to about 1,800–2,000 sq km, making it one of India’s largest urban local bodies.
  • Telangana cites uneven development and regulatory disparities in peri-urban areas, with expected gains in uniform planning, resource mobilisation, disaster management, and investment inflows; one report says GHMC wards would rise from 150 to 177.
