Ghaziabad Constable Dies Rescuing Woman from Hindon Canal

Ankit Tomar, a traffic police constable, lost his life after attempting to save a woman who jumped into the silt-filled canal following a domestic dispute.

Many houses constructed on floodplains of river Hindon near Chijarsi and Behrampur have inundated due to high water discharge.
The water in the canal was shallow. But it was probably due to thick silt that Ankit could not move out. (Sakib Ali/HT Photo)

Overview

  • Aarti, a 23-year-old woman from Vaishali Sector 2, attempted suicide by jumping into the Hindon Canal on Saturday morning after a domestic dispute with her husband, Aditya.
  • Traffic Sub-Inspector Dharmendra Panwar and Constable Ankit Tomar, on duty nearby, immediately responded by diving into the canal to rescue her.
  • While Aarti was successfully pulled to safety, both officers became stuck in the canal’s treacherous muddy bed; Dharmendra managed to free himself, but Tomar remained trapped.
  • Specialist divers eventually freed Tomar after approximately an hour, but he was pronounced dead at a nearby hospital shortly after.
  • Authorities have sent Tomar’s body for a post-mortem examination and are reviewing the rescue operation in light of the hazardous conditions posed by the canal’s silt-filled bed.
