Ghatshila Bypoll Count: JMM’s Somesh Soren Takes Early Lead

Early tallies point to a ruling-camp edge in a tribal-reserved seat viewed as a test of both leaders’ standing.

Overview

  • Vote counting began at 8 am at Jamshedpur Cooperative College under tight security, with 20 rounds planned across 19 tables, officials said.
  • After the first round, election officials reported Somesh Chandra Soren leading by 2,164 votes over JLKM candidate Ramdas Murmu.
  • A later Election Commission update around noon showed him ahead of the BJP’s Babulal Soren by more than 1,100 votes.
  • The by-election was called after the August death of JMM MLA and former education minister Ramdas Soren; his son Somesh is the JMM nominee, while Babulal Soren is the son of former chief minister Champai Soren.
  • Turnout reached about 74.6% on November 11 in a constituency reserved for tribals, with 13 candidates contesting though the primary face-off is JMM versus BJP.
