GfdS Names 'KI-Ära' Germany's Word of the Year 2025

Jurors said the choice reflects artificial intelligence's perceived epochal impact on society.

Overview

  • The Wiesbaden-based Gesellschaft für deutsche Sprache announced the ranking after reviewing several thousand public and media submissions.
  • "Deal" placed second, with the GfdS noting the term's prominence in President Donald Trump's rhetoric on trade and foreign agreements.
  • "Land gegen Frieden" ranked third and "Sondervermögen" fourth, the latter referring to a €500 billion, debt-financed fund for infrastructure and climate projects approved this year.
  • Managing director Andrea Ewels called the winning term short, accessible and emotionally charged, capturing both opportunities and risks of the technology.
  • The top ten also included Wehrdienst-Lotto, Drohnisierung, Strafzölle, Wohlstandsverlust, klimamüde and Vertiktokung, with selections based on significance rather than raw frequency.
