Germany’s Wolf Territories Level Off at 276 in Latest Count

The latest monitoring points to modest range growth with densifying strongholds.

  • Authorities tallied at least 1,636 wolves as of November 10, 2025, with adults, yearlings and pups confirming ongoing reproduction.
  • Territorial units comprised 219 packs, 43 pairs and 14 territorial singles, concentrated from Lower Saxony through Saxony-Anhalt, Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, Brandenburg and into Saxony.
  • Lower Saxony recorded 63 territories and Brandenburg 60, followed by Saxony with 46, Saxony-Anhalt with 38 and Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania with 34.
  • The mapped range expanded by roughly five percent, with denser occurrences in core regions and scattered new footholds in the south and west; all states except Saarland reported territories.
  • Monitoring logged 163 wolf deaths in 2024/25, including 124 road fatalities and at least 16 illegal killings, with a small number of animals removed for behavioral concerns.
