Overview
- The DWD is investing €2 million to deploy 16 automated pollen monitors across Germany by 2027.
- Its first fully automatic station will be installed in Braunschweig during the third quarter of 2026 followed by sites in Hamburg and Essen.
- Each device photographs more than 60 000 particles per sample and uses AI to identify eight primary allergens and 26 additional pollen types.
- Monitors will transmit data up to four times daily during bloom periods, hourly at peak pollen flights and at least once daily outside the season.
- With 15 percent of Germans suffering hay fever generating €4 billion in annual costs, the enhanced forecast network could cut expenses by about €4 million per year.
