Germany’s Share of Children in Large Families Climbs to 26%

  • Thirteen percent of German families had three or more children in 2024, up from a post-2015 low of 11 percent.
  • Families with an immigration background were nearly twice as likely to have three or more children (19 percent) compared to those without (10 percent).
  • Large families are more common in western Germany (13 percent) than in the eastern states (11 percent).
  • Households with two parents report a 15 percent rate of large families, versus 8 percent among single-parent families.
  • Findings are drawn from the annual microcensus, which surveys about 1 percent of the national population.
