Germany’s Renewable Capacity Climbs 11% to Nearly 210 GW as Solar and Onshore Wind Lead

Hitting the 2030 onshore objective of about 115 gigawatts will take roughly doubling last year’s build rate, the regulator says.

Overview

  • Solar reached 117 gigawatts in 2025 with 16.4 gigawatts added, accounting for more than three quarters of newly installed renewable capacity.
  • Onshore wind expanded by 4.6 gigawatts, lifting installed onshore capacity to 68.1 gigawatts, with North Rhine-Westphalia posting the largest state increase at about 1.3 gigawatts.
  • Bavaria recorded the biggest overall expansion among states, adding roughly 4.5 gigawatts, driven by solar projects.
  • Offshore wind contributed only 0.3 gigawatts of new capacity in 2025, bringing total offshore installations to 9.5 gigawatts, while biomass growth remained stagnant.
  • Authorities approved 20.8 gigawatts of onshore wind projects in 2025, pointing to a larger pipeline and a potential acceleration in coming builds.
