Germany’s Presidential Office to Relocate to €205 Million Interim Headquarters by Spring 2026

The relocation to a site by Berlin Central Station paves the way for a climate-neutral renovation that will add full barrier-free access to Schloss Bellevue.

Overview

  • The project budget has climbed from €137 million to €205 million due to rising material costs, expanded climate-neutrality and fire-safety requirements, and increased scope.
  • A purpose-built office near Hauptbahnhof is scheduled for completion by end-2025 and will house about 250 presidential staff from spring 2026.
  • Relocation will cost roughly €300,000 and the Bundespräsidialamt will pay €16 million annually in rent under a five-year lease with the Federal Real Estate Agency.
  • Once the president’s team returns to Bellevue, the interim building will be repurposed for other top federal bodies, including ministries, the Chancellery and the Federal Audit Office.
  • Schloss Bellevue will undergo its first full renovation in two decades starting early 2026, marking a major upgrade beyond the minimal 2005 refurbishment.
