Overview

  • The population grew by 121,000 people or 0.1 percent to 83.6 million at the end of 2024, the highest ever recorded in Germany.
  • Net migration remained positive but fell sharply from 660,000 in 2023 to 420,000 in 2024, maintaining its role as the primary growth driver.
  • Deaths exceeded births by about 330,000 for the second consecutive year, deepening the country’s natural population decline.
  • Foreign residents rose by 2.3 percent to 12.4 million, representing 14.8 percent of the total population, with Turks, Ukrainians and Syrians as the largest groups.
  • Regional disparities persisted as western states saw population gains—led by Bavaria—while eastern states excluding Berlin continued to lose residents.
