Germany’s Poland Coordinator Says Stationary Border Checks Must Not Become Permanent

He calls for clear criteria to scale back the measures, pointing to declining arrivals alongside severe A12 congestion.

Overview

  • Knut Abraham urged that fixed checks on the Polish frontier not become a normal condition and questioned when they can be rolled back as migrant numbers fall.
  • Germany introduced the controls in October 2023 to curb irregular migration, later intensified them and authorized turnbacks at the border, and has extended them through March 2026.
  • Poland began reciprocal checks in July and extended them to 4 October, and Abraham said he expects Warsaw to prolong them further because they mirror German steps.
  • Repeated jams on the A12 near Frankfurt (Oder) have drawn heavy criticism, and the federal Autobahn company plans a new lane configuration in the fourth quarter to reduce backups.
  • Appointed in May as coordinator for German–Polish cooperation, Abraham is pressing for short‑term relief on the A12 and a timetable for easing stationary checks.
