Germany’s October Car Registrations Rise 7.8% as EVs Surge, PHEVs Overtake Diesel

Analysts say the surge largely reflects a rebound from last year’s subsidy-driven slump.

Overview

  • The KBA reported 250,133 new passenger cars registered in October in Germany, up 7.8% year on year.
  • Battery‑electric registrations rose 47.7% to 52,425 vehicles, lifting their share to 21.0% of the market.
  • Plug‑in hybrids climbed 60% to roughly 31,000 units and, for the first time, exceeded new diesel registrations at about 30,500.
  • Petrol registrations fell 12.9% to nearly 65,000 and diesel dropped 15.8%, underscoring a shift in drivetrain mix.
  • EY noted the overall market is only 0.5% higher year to date than 2024 and that EV sales are just about 2% above the same period of 2023.
