Overview
- Germany recorded 430,000 more arrivals than departures in 2024, down from 663,000 in 2023 and a 2022 peak of 1.462 million.
- Arrivals declined 12% to 1.69 million while departures held steady at 1.26 million year-on-year.
- Inflows from Syria dropped by 25%, from Turkey by 53% and from Afghanistan by 32%, with net migration from Ukraine remaining stable at 121,000.
- For the first time since 2008, 34,000 more people left Germany for other EU countries than entered from them, driven by falls in migration from Poland, Bulgaria and Romania.
- Internal interstate moves reached around one million, with Brandenburg gaining the most newcomers (+12,000) and Berlin experiencing the largest loss (-15,000).
