Germany's Local Transport in 2024 Logged Fewer Passengers but More Distance Than 2019

Destatis warns that centralized Deutschlandticket sales combined with limited automated counting may have understated bus ridership.

Overview

  • Germany recorded 11.5 billion local transport passengers in 2024, about 2% below the pre-pandemic year 2019.
  • Total transport performance rose to 121 billion person-kilometres, up 7% versus 2019, with average trips around 10.5 km overall and 23 km on regional rail.
  • Buses remained the most used mode with 5.4 billion passengers (down 1% from 2019), tram usage fell 5% to 3.9 billion, and regional rail counted about 2.8 billion riders in a year affected by strikes.
  • Destatis reports that the Deutschlandticket could have contributed to more medium-distance travel by bus and regional rail.
  • Passenger growth slowed to 1% year over year in the first half of 2025, the Deutschlandticket costs €58 per month now and is set to rise to €63 in 2026, and industry estimates put users at roughly 14 million.
