Germany’s LNG Imports Hit Record in Q3 as Terminals Ramp Up

New North Sea capacity alongside a larger transit role drives the surge.

Overview

  • Federal Network Agency data show about 35 TWh regasified in the third quarter, lifting January–September volumes to roughly 74 TWh and raising LNG’s share to 13.25% of gas imports in Q3.
  • North Sea terminals at Wilhelmshaven and Brunsbüttel handled around 33 TWh in Q3, while the Rügen site contributed about 2 TWh due to harbor works.
  • The floating regasification unit Excelsior began commercial service at Wilhelmshaven in late August, adding capacity to the system.
  • Germany’s role as a transit hub has grown since Russian transport contracts toward Austria expired on January 1, increasing flows to Austria, Czechia, Switzerland and parts of Central and Eastern Europe.
  • Gas storage levels have hovered in the mid‑70s percent, keeping focus on LNG that is bought at global prices in competition with Asia, and experts consider Russian-origin LNG via German terminals unlikely.
