Germany’s Labor Market Shifts Toward Standard Employment and 20-Hour Part-Time Roles

The latest Destatis data show regular full-time positions rising to nearly three-quarters of jobs, with atypical work and self-employment continuing to decline.

  • Last year, 74.8 percent of German workers held a Normalarbeitsverhältnis, up from 65.8 percent in 2010.
  • The share of employees working more than 20 hours a week in part-time roles nearly doubled from 7.3 percent to 14.1 percent between 2010 and 2024.
  • Atypical positions such as temporary contracts and mini-jobs fell from 22.6 percent in 2010 to 17.2 percent last year.
  • Self-employment declined steadily from 11.1 percent in 2010 to 7.9 percent in the past year.
  • Destatis defines standard employment as salaried, open-ended roles with social insurance contributions and at least 21 hours of work per week.
