Germany’s Hospital Workforce Tops One Million FTEs as Inpatient Cases Partially Recover

  • On a full‑time equivalent basis, hospital employment reached 1,014,800 in 2024, the first time above one million since the series began in 1991.
  • Germany counted 1,841 hospitals with an average of 472,900 beds, including 26,000 intensive care and 7,700 intermediate care beds, down 0.9% year over year and 4.3% versus 2019.
  • The average length of stay declined to 7.1 days, and bed occupancy rose to 72.0% but remained below the 2019 level of 77.2%.
