Germany’s Home-Office Use Steady at 24% as Fully Remote Work Declines

Experts see no nationwide rollback despite isolated return-to-office demands.

Overview

  • Destatis reports that 24% of workers used home office at least occasionally in 2024, matching 2022–2023 and remaining well above 2019’s 13%.
  • Only 24% of home-office users worked exclusively from home in 2024, while 46% spent as many or more days at the workplace than at home.
  • The likelihood of using home office rises with commute length, reaching 42% for employees with journeys of 50 kilometers or more versus 14% for under 5 kilometers.
  • Usage is highest among 35- to 44-year-olds at 29% and lowest among 15- to 24-year-olds at 11%.
  • Ifo researchers say company-level pushbacks have not produced a measurable national decline in hybrid or remote arrangements.
