Overview

  • Germany consumed 594,314 GWh of gas in winter 2024/25, an 8.9% increase from the previous winter due to colder temperatures.
  • Household and commercial consumption rose by 7.7%, while industrial usage increased by 10.1%, driven by a February that was 5.1°C colder than the prior year.
  • Gas consumption remains 8.9% below the 2018–2021 pre-crisis average, with households and businesses reducing usage by 11.5% and industry by 6.6%.
  • Gas storage levels fell to 31% by spring 2025, down from 68% a year earlier, partly due to the end of Russian gas transit through Ukraine.
  • The 2022 'Alarmstufe' emergency status remains in place, sparking calls for its revocation as critics argue it undermines climate goals and supports fossil fuel projects.
