Germany's Fuel Watchdog Maps 2025 Price Gaps Over 20 Cents by Region

The Tankbilanz says border regions are priciest because cross-border refuelling weakens local competition.

Overview

  • Average pump prices in 2025 were €1.74 per litre for E5 and €1.61 for diesel, slightly below 2024 levels, helped by a sharp Brent decline reported over the year.
  • Bundeskartellamt data show E5 averages differ by about 5 cents between federal states but by more than 20 cents between specific regions.
  • Cheaper zones included Swabia, Lower Bavaria and parts of Franconia, while areas near the Czech, Swiss and Austrian borders were among the costliest.
  • Around Lake Constance, Konstanz and Hegau were pricier than Nordbaden and Karlsruhe, with the Obersee and Lindau area sitting in the middle of the range.
  • ADAC advises refuelling during evening low-price windows and using price apps, estimating about 13 cents per litre in typical savings and more than 40 cents compared with motorway stations.
