Germany's EV Registrations Rebound to 19.3% Share in September

The rise reflects low 2024 comparisons plus tactical self or fleet registrations rather than stronger private demand.

Overview

  • KBA reported 45,495 new battery-electric cars in September, giving BEVs a 19.3% share as total registrations rose 12.8% year over year to 235,528.
  • Hybrids climbed to 97,212 units (+28.9%) with 27,685 plug-in hybrids (+85.4%), and average CO2 for new cars fell 8.8% to 102.8 g/km.
  • Industry data highlight inflated totals from self-registrations and fleet deals, with ZDK citing 65,401 BEV self-registrations since 2023 and Volkswagen at 24% self-registrations in July.
  • Tesla’s German registrations fell 9.4% from a year earlier in September, with 3,404 vehicles recorded.
  • Carmaker results diverged: BMW deliveries rose 8.8% in Q3 with 102,864 BEVs (-0.6% YoY), while Mercedes’ group deliveries fell 12% as BEV sales improved 22% versus Q2 and were roughly flat year over year at Mercedes-Benz Cars.
